“My music might sound melancholic and sentimental, but personally I am bold and fearless,” says Kamila Batavia, an Indonesian indie singer-songwriter currently living in Hamburg, Germany. After successfully setting foot in the Indonesian music industry with her debut single “Berakhir dan Berlalu”, Kamila Batavia started her journey into the German music industry with her second single called “Als Ich Einschlief” or translated into English “When I Fell Asleep”.
The release of this second single is a bold step that she took because this song goes against the stereotypical flow of music genres in Germany, namely upbeat pop-rock.
“Als Ich Einschlief” tells the story of a romantic relationship that does not find clarity so that unattainable wishes in real life are instead projected repeatedly in the dream world.
With poetic lyrics wrapped in rhetorical devices and descending stepwise chord progressions in the chorus and bridge, “Als Ich Einschlief” creates an intense and emotional nostalgia for the listener.
Compared to “Berakhir dan Berlalu” which has ascending chord progressions in the chorus, the descending stepwise chord progressions in “Als Ich Einschlief” are intentionally composed by Kamila Batavia so that the listener can impressionistically get a picture of the moody feeling that results from that wishful thinking that never seems to come true.
Produced by Faizal Saputra who's also an audio engineer, “Als Ich Einschlief”'s cinematic and dreamlike ambience can take the listener to dream realm.
